Meet Dr. Nia Allen

Hi Y’all!! I’m Dr. Nia Allen, fashion scholar, cultural critic, storyteller, and the founder of The Overdressed Black Girl, a media platform exploring the intersection of fashion, identity, culture, and power through the lens of Black womanhood.

Based in Nashville, Tennessee, my work lives at the intersection of academia, industry, and storytelling. Through essays, podcasting, video content, live events, and public speaking, I create conversations that challenge the fashion industry to think deeper about representation, visibility, and the cultural narratives shaping what we wear and why.

Before launching The Overdressed Black Girl, I built my career across both luxury retail and higher education, with professional experience at brands including Gucci, Nordstrom, and Macy’s. Today, I serve as a fashion academic and industry voice, bringing both scholarly rigor and lived experience to conversations about fashion, consumer behavior, identity, and inclusion.

I am also the creator of The Fashion Weekend, an event platform I founded in Cleveland, Ohio, designed to celebrate emerging creatives, build community, and expand access to conversations around fashion, culture, and entrepreneurship.

Over the years, I’ve had the honor of leading and moderating conversations with some of fashion’s most influential voices, including a fireside conversation with Harlem's Fashion Row / Brandice Daniel, as well as hosting conversations centered on equity in design, Black creativity, and the future of fashion. My work has been featured at spaces including Soho House during Nashville Design Week, and I’ve collaborated on initiatives that push fashion and the culture forward.

My written work and commentary have been featured in publications including Business of Fashion, Business Insider, PopSugar, The Huffington Post, and Murfreesboro Magazine. I was also honored with the Trailblazer Award for my contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion in fashion.

When I’m not teaching, speaking, writing, or creating content, you can find me building The Overdressed Black Girl through my podcast, YouTube channel, editorial essays, and live conversations where fashion becomes the starting point for deeper conversations about Black culture, our identity, and our power.

Welcome!! I hope you stay awhile!!!
